How to Read A Book That You're Forced To Read

It Happens

Being back in school means a whole slew of material to read. Now this is not a problem if you are someone like me, I love reading. It’s when a particular book is forced on me that there is a difficulty to find the motivation to read. What can you do? Besides procrastinate that is: especially if you have to write an essay on that book, in which case the only other option would be to use custom essay writing services.

Forcing yourself to read is not a good idea, because if you are anything like me you will be reaching for the remote before one page is read. Family Guy and The Simpsons have both benefited from my frustration with having to read “The Immortal Life Of Henrietta Lacks,” By Rebecca Skloot. The actual story seems to be quite interesting, and would actually hold my attention if not for the fact that this is an assigned book and not one that I choose for myself. Sometimes it is the mere fact the book has been assigned that turns me off to it. So here are some tips to help you and me out.

1.Don't Sweat The Small Stuff

Seems like simple advice right? It is really is, but getting caught up in the anger, annoyance, whaterver you are feeling is quite easy. I always allow myself one moment of unadulterated frustration, like throwing the book against the wall to realize my frustration and then move on with the task at hand. The Professor probably wouldn't like to read this book either, but because of curriculum standards, she is the same boat as her students.

2. Pretend You Really Want to Read the Book

This one is hard, especially if you are not like me and do not like to read. Tricking yourself into thinking that you really want to read a particular book that was assigned to you is not an easy task. Who knows your taste better than you? Take a step back from yourself and ask yourself, if this had not been forced on me, would I want to read it? IN my case the answer is no, but since I ahve to rea "Henrietta," predtending to be interested in teh scientific aspect is helping me through it.

3. Skim The Book

This seems the most logical choice. Skimming is a science and if you are good at it, then this is the best suggestion for you. Look for major points in the chapter and keep those in mind. Skimming definitely helps you get through things faster but keep in mind that you will miss some of the details and that can be a problem. My suggestion for that is just to go back if the need arises and read the section more carefully.

Now it’s time for me and Miss Lacks to get better acquainted, hopefully my neighbors don’t mind a bit of screaming, because I already feel the tension in my back because of this book.
